Technology-Assisted Therapy Policy
This document outlines my approach to providing therapy through technology-assisted services, including phone and internet-based sessions. These services may involve video, audio, or data transmission and are used to deliver care, consultation, treatment, and secure communication.
Please take a moment to read through this policy. If you have any questions or concerns, I encourage you to bring them up during our sessions so we can discuss them together. This is especially important in periods where all sessions are held remotely.
Services, Security, and Confidentiality
Services Offered
Although I typically offer in-person therapy, I also provide sessions through phone and secure video platforms such as Google Meet. You can access Google Meet sessions via its website or through its apps on iPhone, Android, or other devices. These options allow us to continue our work even if meeting in person isn't possible.
Security Measures
I take the security of your personal and health information seriously. The technology I use for teletherapy includes industry-standard encryption (at least 128-bit) to protect your data during transmission. I do not record or store video, audio, or written transcripts of our sessions. However, because our sessions involve internet-based communication, there are inherent risks that cannot be entirely eliminated.
Back-Up Plans
If our session is interrupted due to technical issues (e.g., internet failure or dropped calls), I will do my best to reconnect with you promptly. If we are unable to resume the session via video, I will call you by phone or follow up via text to make alternate arrangements.
Confidentiality
Your confidentiality remains protected, whether sessions are held in person or via technology. The same ethical and legal standards apply. There are some exceptions to confidentiality - such as cases involving harm to self or others, or mandated reporting of abuse. (Please refer to the Client Agreement and Notice of Privacy Practices for more detailed information.)
Access to Records
You have the right to access your health information and therapy records, as outlined by Texas and federal law.
Benefits and Risks of Technology-Assisted Therapy
Potential Benefits
There are several potential benefits to technology-assisted therapy, including:
-
Increased flexibility in scheduling and location
-
Reduced travel and time constraints
-
Greater accessibility during illness, travel, or inclement weather
-
Opportunities to reflect and communicate from a comfortable environment
-
Continuity of care when in-person sessions aren’t possible
Potential Risks
Despite precautions, there are some risks associated with remote therapy:
-
Confidentiality may be compromised if others can overhear your side of the session
-
Technical failures (e.g., poor internet connection) may disrupt communication
-
Digital communications may be intercepted or accessed by unauthorized individuals
-
Misunderstandings are more likely without in-person cues
I will continue to assess whether teletherapy remains a suitable mode of care for you. If at any point I believe that in-person treatment or another form of support would be more appropriate, we’ll discuss that together and explore your options.
Results Not Guaranteed
As with any form of therapy, no outcomes can be guaranteed. Progress may occur gradually, and there is a possibility that symptoms could remain the same or worsen. My goal is to provide you with thoughtful, individualized support, whether online or in person.
Questions or Concerns
If you have questions or would like more information about any of these policies, I encourage you to reach out to me directly so we can talk through them together.
If you feel uncomfortable discussing a concern with me or believe your rights have been violated, you can contact the Texas Department of State Health Services – Board of Professional Licensing and Certification Unit at (800) 942-5540.
Changes to This Policy
As technology evolves, I may revise or update this policy. The most current version will always be available upon request and will be posted on my website.
